Two young girls are found brutally strangled in the streets of Edinburgh. Detective Sergeant John Rebus is part of the team tasked with hunting down the killer before he strikes again.

In the meantime, someone seems to be playing a practical joke on Rebus, sending him cryptic messages such as there are clues everywhere. Could there be a connection ?
